All of you who know me, know that my passion is cosmetic dentistry. Any time I have a chance to improve someone’s smile, I jump at the opportunity. Well, I’ve noticed a shift in the last several years to function. We are seeing more and more people who are fed up with not being able to eat or chew properly or people who have stayed away from the dentist their whole lives to find themselves uncomfortable and even afraid to be among people because their teeth are so decayed and broken down and ugly. Many denture wearers who are fed up with loose dentures are even calling. Many people are even having health issues because they can’t chew properly.
That is where my passion really shines. It’s not just about pretty smiles…it’s about function and health. I love to rebuild, create and design people’s smiles to achieve a beautiful smile that also allows people to chew properly…sometimes for the first time since childhood. Using dental implants and all of the wonderful time tested dental materials available today, I can help change people’s lives and make them more comfortable and healthy.

Link between Gum Disease and Systemic Health

We are more convinced now than ever of the importance of healthy gums. The easiest way for you to tell if there is a gum problem is to look for bleeding gums. If you brush your teeth – and I mean brush them well with particular attention to the area where the teeth meet the gums, and floss the areas in between the teeth – there should be no bleeding. Healthy gums do not bleed. Over the years, we have all come to accept some bleeding as normal since the general public sees it all the time. The fact is, it might be common, but it’s a sign of a problem – a problem that is too often ignored. If any other part of our digestive tract bled on a regular basis, it would get a lot more attention.
The reason it is so important is because of the bacteria in the mouth. Bleeding means there is a breach in the seal that keeps the inside of the body sterile. The blood is getting out through a leak in the capillary walls. Blood gets out. Bacteria get in. These gum disease bacteria have been found in cardiac arteries in heart attack patients, in the brains of stroke patients, and in the cholesterol-thickened blocked blood vessels of cardio-vascular disease. As if that wasn’t bad enough, there’s more.
The reason gums bleed is because the presence of these bacteria trigger a response by the body’s immune system.
In many cases, that response is not limited to the gums. This challenge to the immune system causes a whole body response. Blood sugar control is affected in diabetics and pre-diabetics. Fetus development is affected in pregnant women which can lead to low weight, pre-term deliveries. And there’s more. That’s the back story.
That’s why we are so concerned. Gum disease is about a whole lot more than teeth. The exciting part is that we have new diagnostic tools and treatment modalities. We can now predict who is at risk for periodontitis before we see clinical signs of the disease. We have treatment options that can avoid the need for gum surgery. We are light years beyond the time when all we could do is lecture our patients to brush and floss better.

Most of us know at least one person who wears dentures. Most denture wearers hate their lower denture because it moves when they speak, eat or even just breath. It’s because the tongue pushes that denture all over the place. Many of these people don’t go out in public, don’t eat with other people, or don’t even wear their lower denture. Hello to all my patients and friends,
Wow! What a year to reflect upon. The worst recession in years, having to do without, charities suffering because giving is down. But wait…not in Havertown!!
About a month ago, Patti contacted the Boy Scouts of America and we became involved with their annual holiday food drive and if that wasn’t enough, Patti also organized and collected baby supplies for the Mother’s Home of Upper Darby. She didn’t even tell me! She sent a letter out, posted signs in our building and I have been shocked, amazed, and at the same time proud and humbled by the overwhelming support by so many of our patients and neighbors in the building. Patients who didn’t even have appointments made special trips to drop off food. Our UPS and Fed-Ex drivers dropped off baby supplies and even other staff members in our building came by with donations.
This is the true spirit of the holidays. Giving, doing for others who have less, taking action and selfless acts of kindness. I am so proud to have Patti as a staff member and, more importantly, a friend who takes the initiative to do good for others and be a genuinely good person. I am also thankful for Robin, our hygienist, who’s synagogue I accompanied to a local homeless shelter last week, where we helped serve food. I am very blessed to be surrounded by such good, thoughtful, caring staff, patients, and friends.
The recession will pass. Jobless rates will go down and our economy will recover and be strong again. But giving, caring, thinking of others, being happy and loving…that’s what is most important in life! Thank you for all your support and caring and have a safe and healthy New Year!
